Keep an eye on the waves below, you may be watching one of South Africa’s most charismatic marine mammals.  Indian Ocean bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) are frequent visitors to Morgan Bay. These highly intelligent animals travel in social groups called pods and can often be seen surfing waves, hunting fish, or moving along the coastline. They regularly forage near the river mouth where nutrients and fish are concentrated. If you’re lucky, you may witness coordinated hunting behaviour as dolphins work together to herd fish into tight schools.  Other dolphins which are seen from the cliffs are common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), these fast-moving, highly energetic dolphins often occur in large pods and are associated with feeding events involving shoals of sardines and other baitfish. They are less commonly seen from shore than bottlenose dolphins but may be observed from elevated viewpoints during periods of intense feeding activity.
