The Occasional Visitor – Southern Right Whales

Southern right whales are less commonly seen here than humpbacks, but occasional sightings occur during winter and spring. These whales were once hunted almost to extinction but have made a remarkable recovery. Southern rights are easily recognised by their large heads, broad backs, and distinctive rough patches called callosities. Their presence reminds us of the importance of marine conservation.
