- Kei Mouth, Eastern Cape, South Africa
It’s springtime in Kei Mouth and it’s not only the weather that’s hotting up!
The residents of Kei Mouth embraced the first day of spring, determined to enjoy their beach and village before the holidaymakers flock in to celebrate the summer months in our idyllic coastal retreat.
The 1st of September saw a crowd of determined swimmers congregating at Neptune’s Cove for what organizer, Noleen Weyer, hopes will be the first of many Spring Day swims. Representatives of the NSRI Station 47 were on hand to ensure there were no unfortunate mishaps and to guide our brave (or fool-hardy) locals safely into the water… and back out again.
Although the Wild Coast wind was unforgiving, the sea was comparatively warm and the waves on the welcoming side of formidable, making it a challenging yet exhilarating experience for those daring enough to take the plunge.
Perhaps more impressive than the swim itself was the array of
stylish bathrobes and beachwear that adorned the participants both before and after their swim, turning the rocky shore into an impromptu fashion show that ably reflected the Kei Mouth locals’ sense of occasion!
We were fortunate to have pleasant conditions and the local NSRI on hand
to keep us all safe, and it just goes to show how much we rely on the NSRI
to ensure our safety in and around the water. Their presence and the lifesaving tools they provide, such as the pink buoys scattered throughout
the village, are vital in making our beaches a safer place for everyone to enjoy.
As if a plunge into the chilly waters of the Indian Ocean wasn’t enough to mark the start of Spring, at lunchtime a host of local residents and homeowners congregated on the newly spruced-up Grosvenor Square for a village bring-and-braai.
The Spring Day Bring-and-Braai, organized by the Kei Mouth Owners and Residents Association (KMORA), held its inaugural event last year but was even more popular this year, drawing nearly twice as many attendees.
The Square was very festive, thanks to Pixie’s efforts with the bunting and the music provided by Bev and Gary at Beach, Beds, and Beyond.
The new bridges funded by KMORA also added a little extra charm to the setting, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the occasion.
Of course, just because you were in attendance didn’t mean you had to eat! I have it on good authority that the last residents standing were enjoying a mainly liquid diet, which could explain the dancing at the Fishermen’s Den later in the day!
While fun was the order of the day, there was a more serious note behind the celebrations, as KMORA chair, Kim Roberts, reminded us. It seems everyone in attendance was 100% behind her, as the event ended up raising R4,000 for the association, giving it a much-needed boost to fund the upkeep of the Square, as well as other community projects and initiatives. Kim’s words struck a chord with everyone, reinforcing the importance of coming together not just to celebrate, but to contribute to the ongoing development and well-being of our village.
It’s great to see the community gathering together to celebrate the coming summer and consolidate their sense of unity and camaraderie. As the days grow longer and warmer, events like these remind us of the strong bonds that make Kei Mouth not just a place to live, but a place to belong.
PS. A belated thank you to Elise Haber for the fabulous images!
