Kei Mouth Tourism

Welcome to Kei Mouth – The Gateway to the Wild Coast

The gateway to the Wild Coast, the lovely seaside village of Kei Mouth is situated just one hour’s drive from the centre of East London.

Perfectly located for a two to three-night stop-over, it’s nestled halfway between Addo Elephant Park (Gqeberha/Port Elizabeth) and the mighty Drakensberg mountains.

A tarred road takes you into the heart of the village, where the local Spar provides all your essential needs, and numerous accommodation options offer a comfortable base from which to explore the surrounding area.

A Seaside Destination with Something for Everyone

Kei Mouth offers more than just convenience – it’s the perfect family-friendly destination to unwind and reconnect with nature. The village is popular with sports and adventure enthusiasts, from runners and mountain bikers to deep-sea anglers and golfers.

Nature lovers and bird watchers will also wonder at the undisturbed beauty of the coast, with its rich biodiversity and diverse landscapes.

Cross the Great Kei River into the Old Transkei

The iconic pont, one of only three car-transporting pontoon services left in South Africa, takes you across the mighty Kei River and into the dramatic landscapes of the aptly named Wild Coast.

All part of the local experience, a trip on the pont offers panoramic views of the river and its surrounding landscapes as it transports you to the start of your Wild Coast adventure.

The perfect place to start exploring, Kei Mouth is just a stone’s throw from the traditional coastal hotels of Trennery’s and Seagulls, where you can experience warm hospitality and home-cooked food.

You don’t have to travel that far to get a good meal – Kei Mouth has a selection of restaurants and cafes serving delicious South African food.

Discover the Eastern Cape: Culture, Adventure, Surf, and Sunshine

Choose a spacious self-catering cottage, shady campsite or comfortable game lodge as your base and let the friendly local community and laid-back atmosphere make you feel at home.

For those interested in history and culture, Kei Mouth is steeped in tradition, and visitors can learn about local customs and the Xhosa way of life. Local tours and experiences provide a deeper understanding of the cultural tapestry that makes this part of South Africa so unique.

Outdoor enthusiasts and adventurers will find plenty to keep them occupied with guided hikes, fishing excursions, rock climbing, abseiling, and kayaking experiences that showcase the region’s natural beauty and diverse landscapes.

Explore rugged cliffs and hidden waterfalls, paddle along the scenic river routes, or test your skills on the challenging rock faces. Each activity offers a unique way to immerse yourself in this outdoor paradise.

Kei Mouth: Home to Beaches, Birds… and You!

For those seeking a more laid back experience, the surrounding landscapes are ideal for hiking, with numerous trails of varying levels of difficulty. Coastal paths provide stunning views of the Indian Ocean, while inland routes take you through lush valleys and rolling hills. Bird watchers can spot numerous species, from rare sea birds to common forest dwellers.

Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or a bit of both, Kei Mouth promises a memorable experience that will leave you longing to return. So pack your bags, hit the road, and discover the magic of Kei Mouth – where every visit feels like coming home.
